A Surprise Proposal at the Historic Filoli Gardens

It’s always fun to hear about how love survives the miles in a long distance relationship, and then to hear about how the proposals and weddings transpire after that. Today we’re sharing one such story, and some beautiful images of a surprise proposal!

How did you meet?

Nirali and Ron met on Dil Mil – a South Asian Dating App aimed at empowering the world to find love. Despite being 2,600 miles away, in two different countries, they matched and connected. Nirali is from San Francisco, California and Ron is from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Approximately 6 weeks after talking, they met in-person in Chicago for the weekend and started dating! They are both so grateful for their unconventional love story – one that traverses thousands of miles, one that stands the test of these trying times, and one that is endlessly unconditional.

How did this proposal happen?

Given that Ron and Nirali live in different cities, they always talked about doing a photo-shoot in each of the cities they live in. Ron is originally from Toronto, Canada but had been living in Vancouver, Canada shortly after Nirali and Ron started dating. They had originally planned several trips in 2020, but shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, their travel plans were put on hold, and the Canada-US border had ultimately become closed. Ron was back in Toronto after the pandemic hit, and after almost 4 months of not being able to see each other, Ron was finally able to get a flight from Toronto to San Francisco. He knew that this was going to be his chance to finally make the proposal come true. He had been planning the proposal earlier in the year but because of the pandemic, he could not travel to see Nirali. Once Nirali and Ron knew that he could travel to spend a few weeks with her, he told her that they would be planning a photo-shoot during his visit to San Francisco. He told her to get a dress and the rest of the plans would be done by him. Nirali mentioned to Ron that Filoli Gardens had always been one of the places she wanted to visit so he thought what better place to plan the proposal than at Filoli. Ron reached out to Sarahi, the photographer and with her help, planned a beautiful photo-shoot at the botanical garden, where he popped the question! Sarahi was able to capture the moment and get some beautiful photos of the proposal along with photos throughout the garden. It truly felt like a magical moment and day, one that they will remember forever!

Tell us about the ring.

Ron custom designed the ring, and purchased it from a fine jewelry boutique in Vancouver, Canada. He bought a 3-stone diamond ring on a 14K yellow gold band. The ring consists of an oval shaped center stone with two pear shaped side stones weighing 2.9 carat. There is a hidden halo under the oval stone, and stones along the band for a half eternity. Nirali shared that she wanted an oval shaped ring with 3 stones along a yellow gold band and Ron wanted to make sure he got the perfect ring for her!
