Today we head to the desert near Las Vegas for this sunny engagement session with Mikaela and Basil! They kindly also took the time to answer a few questions for us to make this feature even more fun (thanks Matchology!)

How did you two meet? It’s a tale as old as time… well, not exactly…

We actually met in the most modern way: online! However, it wasn’t just swiping right that made our love story something special.

After an online connection, Mikaela played it safe and kept Basil at an arm’s length. Multiple conversations were had over a course of a month before she agreed to meet him for their very first date. It was a great first date (the BEST first date!!) watching the sunset in a well scouted spot overlooking the Las Vegas strip. During that date, they realized they actually lived feet away from each other, in the same apartment complex (and moving in a day apart!). As it turns out, they had even been at the pool texting each other at the same time. Who knows how many times they had just missed each other getting coffee in the morning or checking the mail after work! An amazing first date led to amazing others, but we both agree it was truly love at first sight.

We often talk about how crazy it was that we were steps away from each other but connected online. It’s my running joke that God was like, okay, enough already! Look up from your phone! Ha ha!

What’s your proposal story? He took us to the same place where we had our first date!!! It was a Friday, and I had worked from home that day. He called me around 3:30 or so and asked if I wanted to go watch the sunset. I did not think anything strange of that because probably 2 weeks prior I had said, “babe – we haven’t watched a sunset lately! We gotta go” SOOOO I thought he was being his usual thoughtful self and just listening to what I had said. I LITERALLY had not washed my hair in five days and was wearing leggings I was planning on throwing away. BUT, as soon as Basil got home, I instantly knew something was off (but didn’t think of an engagement). Basil is always, ALWAYS cool, calm, and collected. That day, he was so on edge and nervous and I thought something bad had happened at work. I probably asked him 15 times what was wrong… lol… face palm! When we got to our spot, he poured us some wine and then started being extra cute. He’s always really romantic and sweet, so again, didn’t make me think of anything. BUT he was so fidgety! I’m thinking to myself, “what in the heck is going on??”. Finally, he talks about our first couple of dates (we went to watch the sunset often) and how he remembered looking at me and knowing that I was going to be his wife one day. Then he pulled out the ring, got down on one knee, AND… I DON’T REMEMBER A THING! I BLACKED OUT!! I WAS ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED. When I came back to my senses, I started screaming and jumping up and down and confirmed with Basil that I said “yes” to the question (lol). Best day of my life, besides the day I met him!

Tell us about your ring! Besides perfect, it’s hard to describe! It is a solitaire diamond, no halo, as classic and simple as our relationship. I want to say is 2.5-3 carats with a gold band.

What was your inspiration for your engagement session outfits? I purchased the dress from Lulus, which is my go-to shop online! It’s an effortless, neutral dress that I knew I would wear again and again. I love the slit in the leg, and so did Lianna! Shoes are Steve Madden – god, I love a block heel. I kept all other jewelry away – I wanted the ring to shine. 🙂

from photographer Lianna Marie Photography: “This winter engagement session was inspired by all things neutral. From the florals, to the dress and the last minute location change. Which worked out to be extremely perfect. This little gem of a location is tucked away just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. It was quiet and the perfect scene to escape to for a romantic engagement session. Even after it briefly rained! We chased the sun to make sure this day still happened beautiful. Turned out better than I could have hoped for.”
