I am simply in awe of this gorgeous wedding, captured by NIFCA award-winning Andrew O’Dell of Design Central Studio. I have known Farley Hill all of my life- yet I’ve never seen it quite like this. The backdrop of the forest and the ruins lend a hauntingly beautiful, almost otherworldly quality to the scene – add that to the obvious sparks between our couple and you have the perfect recipe for a dreamy wedding!
What inspired your foray into wedding photography?
Andrew O’Dell: In only my second year of photography a good friend asked me to photograph his wedding which I was a bit hesitant doing but I did it nevertheless. They were ecstatic about the images and as they say the rest is history.
What did you enjoy the most about this shoot?
AD: I enjoyed shooting in the actual ruins at Farley Hill – they serve as a magnificent background.
Were you worried when it started to rain?
AD:Actually I was not worried the least bit when the rain came, since right behind it came the fog which added to the fantastic imagery.
It really seemed like a fun shoot- our featured couple seemed very relaxed- was it easy to get the shots you wanted?
AD: Working with the couple was super easy, they were totally relaxed and easy going so getting the imagery I wanted was no sweat.
Any tips for anyone looking to get into wedding photography?
AD: Firstly, it’s not all about the latest gear and whatnot, Remember you are catching a once in a lifetime magical moment. People skills and more people skills, be a listener and don’t force your agenda on couples. Finally, don’t sweat the small stuff. Something may go wrong on the day but how you deal with it is what matters.
Do you have any advice that might help couples in choosing the right photographer for them?
AD: I encourage couples to make the emphasis about picking a photographer whose style they like and whose previous work shows their expertise. Make this the focus over cost. And, above all, make sure he has a likeable character.
Any thoughts on what the couple can do on their big day to make sure they get the most out of their photography session?
AD: In terms of getting the most out of the session, I would say the day before try not to be sun burnt. Clients then worry on the day that all their tan lines are showing and in extreme cases their skin is totally red and irritated.
For the brides standing in the heels might be a bit much for long periods, feel free to switch to your flip flops for comfort. The photographer might not need to see your shoes most of the time.
Finally, to both the groom and bride, try to be on time. Most times photographic packages have time limits like 2hr, 4hr or 6hr coverage and if you are running late your coverage time might be wasted due to lateness. For instance, if there is a 3:00 pm wedding and the bride is an hour and a half late, that will certainly cut into your coverage.
