To be sure, the innocent and tragic Ophelia is not a likely character to be featured on your average wedding blog and even the proposition elicited a chuckle from the photographer herself – but – I adore great photography and the obvious talent of Melanie Grant just blew me away when I stumbled across this photoshoot. I knew I had to do this feature!
The haunting intensity of these images is startling and what made it even more poignant for me was the fact that the person behind the lens, at only 19, is already producing such compelling work.
It was double the treat to discover too, that the gorgeous vintage dress on the model was designed by none other than Kesia Estwick – another young, local talent on the rise .
What a brilliant collaboration! I am so anxious to see what comes next!
From Melanie: “The shoot was inspired by one of my favourite paintings “Ophelia” by artist Sir John Everett Millais as well as my love for period pieces – a genre of photography which we don’t see much of in Barbados.
I live vicariously through my photography. When standing on set before the model dressed in period clothing I almost feel as though I’m in the same period as her character. When I begin shooting, the world around me disappears and I’m transported to that time.”
