We often think of Hawaii and the Pacific Islands synonymously with the ocean … but there are also hidden, lush garden treasures to be found throughout the island as well. This is the vision that photographer Natalie Malis set out to capture when she dreamed up this island botanical garden inspiration. We love the boldness in color, and the diversity of landscapes and styles that are conveyed through this shoot, and are thrilled to share it with you.

from photographer, Natalie Malis: “As I was planning this shoot from across the Pacific Ocean in Seattle, I had in mind to create something that encapsulated the essence of the place where I grew up. People often think of the ocean when they think “Hawaii,” and it’s true – the Pacific is beautiful – but I think that they miss out when they forget about the garden treasures. I’ve since moved away and I often find myself missing the lush greens of the tropical gardens, as well as the strong, yet laidback spirit of the people of O’ahu; these are the two elements that I wanted to highlight in this project.

I gathered a team of all women creatives for this styled shoot and loved the final product that we were able to make together. Cheyenne exuded the strength and boldness that I don’t often see in bridal imagery, while still allowing her femininity and sweetness to shine in every photograph. Our location of choice was Foster Botanical Garden – the oldest of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens – home to incredible plants of all kinds; pairing the various textures of the towering trees & tropical foliage with the sleek, minimalist designs of de la Rosa’s modern bridal wear made for the perfect, complimentary match. Through changes in hair, makeup, and dress, we were able to create a few different looks for the modern Hawaii bride, including what I think would be a lovely ceremony to reception look change.

I envision this styled shoot to inspire a free-spirited couple to have a morning garden wedding with an intimate gathering of close friends and family members…and maybe they’ll all head to that beautiful Pacific afterwards!”
