From the bride: When Graeme and I first started thinking about our wedding we instantly thought of having a destination wedding. We both adore travel and the idea of taking all of the people we love away to one of our favourite places! Sayulita has it all for us. I grew up spending my winters in Mexico visiting my grandpa and Graeme’s second love in life is surfing so it not only holds sentimental value, it’s also a place that epitomizes so many things we love. The bohemian feel, the surf, the mexican vibe are all perfect.

As a wedding photographer myself, I had a lot of ideas of what I wanted but needed people to help me bring them together and source things in Mexico so I hired Sayulita Dream Weddings to help coordinate the events, and Spread Love Events for decor. I have a lot of brides ask me if I think they should hire a coordinator or day-of help and I really think it such a great investment. Ashley (Spread Love Events) and Andrea (Sayulita Dream Weddings) became my sounding boards and did everything they could to make our day perfect for us. I could not have done it without them!

I think when you’re having a destination wedding the most important thing is always making your guests feel special. We thought we’d maybe have 50-60 people coming down and we ended up with 100 people, which was so amazing! We knew everyone was putting in something extra to be there for us so we really wanted to show them how much we appreciated that. We held a big welcome party at La Terrazola, a great Mexican restaurant on the beach. We wanted the welcome party to be fun and laid-back and to have a chance for everyone to start the celebrations and bond together. There was a Taco and Churro cart from town, an amazing, local Reggae band, a Tequila donkey with shots for guests and wish lanterns for everyone! My favorite part of the night was watching 100 wish lanterns light up the sky, thinking that all of these amazing glowing dots in the sky represent all the love surrounding us. It was amazing!

The wedding day itself was everything I had dreamed it would be. The idea was to create the ultimate beach party, with a lux-boho feel! As a photographer, I have always loved the little details that go into weddings so we ended up bringing a lot of decor down with us and getting some amazing custom pieces done, including a beautiful crochet hanging by Free Creatures and custom calligraphy sea glasses done by the amazing Written Word Calligraphy. Since the day to us was all about our friends and family, we decided to have one of our closest friends marry us and it was one of the best decisions we made! As he announced us husband and wife, a 12-piece mariachi band came up behind the guests and played us back down the aisle to get the party started. They received a standing ovation after cocktail hour and were a huge hit. Our dance floor incorporated a hand-painted Mandala design and was surrounded by day-beds, and lounges on the beach for everyone to relax on the sand as we danced into the wee hours of the night. We had a couple of people tell us to make sure we grabbed a moment to ourselves to step back and take in everything around us. Graeme and I went for a walk on the beach away from the wedding and when we looked back we saw all of our favorite people dancing on the beach with the starry sky above… it was perfect!
